Street and Drainage Division
The Street and Drainage Division is responsible for maintaining the safe operating condition of the City of Dayton’s streets, drainage ditches, storm sewers, and major outfalls. This division plays a critical role in ensuring the city’s infrastructure remains clean, accessible, and functional for residents, visitors, and businesses.
Core Responsibilities and Programs
The division maintains approximately 90 lane miles of city streets and provides a range of repair and maintenance programs to improve roadway conditions and enhance public safety.
Pavement Maintenance Programs
-
Pothole Repair
-
Conducted using a 2-person patch truck equipped with liquid asphalt emulsion and stone aggregate.
-
Most repairs are completed within 15 minutes of arrival.
-
-
Skin Patch Repair
-
Used for larger areas than potholes but smaller than full overlays.
-
Requires a 3-person asphalt distributor crew or a 7-person roller crew.
-
Typically completed within a few hours.
-
-
Asphalt Overlay
-
Full resurfacing of a street using 1½" to 2" thick asphalt.
-
Takes several days per street, extends roadway life by 5–20 years.
-
Note: Not intended to correct drainage issues—addresses surface quality only.
-
Concrete Panel Repairs
-
Involves the complete removal and replacement of damaged concrete panels.
-
Used only when concrete is essential, as it is the most expensive method.
-
Even small repairs can take up to a week.
-
Asphalt is often used as a cost-effective alternative, with excellent results on concrete streets.
Street Sweeping
-
Conducted weekly or as needed on all curbed streets throughout Dayton.
-
Helps remove debris and maintain street cleanliness.
Drainage Maintenance
-
Includes re-grading ditches, cleaning off-road drainage systems, and flushing culverts under driveways and streets.
-
These efforts help manage stormwater flow and prevent flooding.
-
For culvert sizing requirements, refer to the City’s Design Standards.
💧 Remember: The drain is just for rain. Help us keep our waterways clean by avoiding dumping debris or pollutants into storm drains.
Right-of-Way and Ditch Mowing
-
Regular mowing is conducted in the spring, summer, and fall to ensure visibility, accessibility, and drainage efficiency in public rights-of-way and ditches.
